Accomplishments
QEP/Information Fluency Accomplishments – 2006-2009
- 6 large grants ($46,000 over 3 years) in progress—Philosophy, Nursing, the Burnett Honors College, SLS 1501 Strategies for Success, Digital Media, and the Cocoa and Palm Bay Regional Campus Writing Centers
- 66 small grants ($1,000 – $3,000) that range from Microbiology and Molecular Biology’s course in research and presentation skills to an SDES seminar on financial literacy
- Students have been directly (through course and curricular changes) and indirectly (through the online Writing Center, co-curricular projects, and library modules) affected by the grant projects. The countable efforts include:
- 1,892 from 2006-present in Intro to Philosophy
- 1,328 from 2007-present in undergraduate and graduate Nursing Programs
- 2,625 from 2006-present in Honors College
- 2,224 from 2006-present in SLS 1501 Strategies for Success
- 2,412 students used the online Writing Center in 2006-present
- 3,107 students have utilized the InfoLit modules
- 64 faculty in 103 courses have made the InfoLit modules part of their class assignments
- 112 faculty have participated in the Information Fluency track of the Summer Faculty Development Conference (2006-2009)
- Martha Marinara was appointed to the planning committee for the EDUCAUSE focus group on information literacy in Boulder, Colorado in August 2007
- Chuck Dziuban was appointed to the National Policy Council for Information and Communication Technology in 2007
- IF conducted a student focus group to help us target the IF website to student needs in 2006 & 2007
- Graduate and undergraduate students and staff developed a blog to address students’ concerns about research and information fluency, 2006 to present
- IF Continues to develop the QEP’s momentum within the campus environment including a marketing campaign in Central Florida Future to reach on-campus students, 2005 to present
- Martha Marinara and Hank Lewis spoke to the Honors Symposium students on Information Fluency and the Media in October 2008
- Leadership base for Information Fluency continues to be broadened by inviting grant recipients to give presentations to other faculty and staff, 2006 to present
- UCF continues to develop a national and international reputation and expertise in information fluency
- IF Office was one of the sponsors of both the Spring and Fall 2008 Ethics Bowls; Martha Marinara, Jane Moody, and Hank Lewis served on the organizing committee and moderated and judged during the competition
- IF supported information fluency faculty publications by providing research support through the Research Institute for Teaching Effectiveness (RITE) and by providing travel funds, 2005 to present
- Scaling evaluation and development promoted (iSkills, CAL, Project SAILS)
- Gathering assessment data for report to SACS-COC on all efforts at UCF under the Information Fluency Initiative from 2006 to present; assessment data collected and organized in an ePortfolio
- IF is working with iTunes U to spread the message of information fluency at UCF during 2009
- IF video report has been produced on Enhancement and Engagement grants for use on campus and as a part of the final report to SACS-COC, 2008-2009
- The IF Office co-sponsored conferences with the Department of Philosophy in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Martha Marinara and Jane Moody were on the planning committee and served as conveners for the conferences in 2007 and 2008. Dr. Marinara and Hank Lewis coordinated the conference in 2009
- 2007 Conference Theme: Heresy, Blasphemy, and the Freedom of Expression (approximately 280 attendees)
- 2008 Conference Theme: Knowledge Rights & Information Sharing in the 21st Century (approximately 100 attendees)
- 2009 Conference Theme: Evolution, the Environment, & Responsible Knowledge (approximately 350 participants)
- Neil Patten, Ph.D. student & IF Graduate Assistant, hosted a radio show, IFFY Unleashed, on WNSC for one hour each week. The show features conversations with some of UCFs most tech and research savvy folks.
- Neil Patten writes a blog on the IF web site called Thinking for You
- Hank Lewis writes a blog on the IF web site called TECHNO IFFY
Presentations, Conferences & Publications
- 14 faculty have given presentations about IF at national and international conferences
- 10 faculty and staff have published articles that focus on information fluency
Information Fluency Initiative
- Presented a featured session on information fluency at the annual meeting of EDUCAUSE in Dallas, October 2006
- Conducted a session on UCF’s QEP at the annual meeting of SACS-COC, December 2006
- Conducted a workshop on information fluency at the annual meeting of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative in Atlanta, January 2007. The workshop was titled, Practices for Integrating Information Technology Literacy.
- Presented at the MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning Online) International Conference in New Orleans, August 2007. The presentation was Building a Culture of Information Fluency in Higher Education. Presenters were Martha Marinara, Judith Ruland, and Nancy Stanlick
- Chuck Dziuban presented Information Fluency in the Digital Age at the Focus on Teaching and Technology Regional Conference, University of Missouri, St. Louis Campus, November 2007
- Martha Marinara, Fritzlaine Powell, Hunan Sadri, and Chuck Dziuban presented Planting and Assessing Flowers: Developing a Broader Leadership Base for the QEP. SACS-COC 2007 Annual Meeting, New Orleans, LA, December 2007
- IF Conducted an IE Assessment Plan and Information Fluency workshop with UCF Assessment Coordinators in August to assist with identification of areas to incorporate information fluency in their program assessment plans
- IF was invited to do the preparation for a QEP presentation for SACS in June in Atlanta
- Jane Moody gave a presentation concerning e-Portfolios at Miami University of Ohio, in July 2008
- Presentations were made at the Students, Technology, and Learning: Strategies for Success, AASCU: EDUCAUSE Conference at the University of Central Florida, July 2008. Presentations included:

- Chuck Dziuban and Patsy Moskal presented Building a Sustainable Assessment Culture at the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation of the School of Education, University of Southern California, February 2008
- Red Deer College in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada sent two representatives to UCF to discuss information literacy and UCF’s success with the QEP. They met with eight different participants in the UCF QEP from various departments and colleges and with the IF staff. The two day visit was an opportunity to showcase the work done at UCF.
- Chuck Dziuban presented Information Fluency and Online Learning in the Digital Age at the SUNY Online Learning Summit, February 2008
- IF presented at SACS-COC 2008 Conference in December (Martha Marinara, Chuck Dziuban, and Penny Beile), Building a Reflective, Recursive and Sustainable Culture for the QEP.
- Martha Marinara, Chuck Dziuban, and Hank Lewis will be presenting at the 2009 SACS-COC conference in December 2009. Establishing QEP Learning Outcomes: Measured and Organic is the title of the presentation.
