QEP: An Administrative Overview
Dr. Joel Hartman, Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar, Dr. Martha Marinara, & Dr. Chuck Dziuban
Dr. Hartman, Vice Provost & Chief Information Officer of UCF explains the genesis of the QEP project and Dr. Marinara, Associate Professor and QEP Director discusses the implementation of the quality enhancement plan at UCF. Dr. Morrison-Shetlar, Vice Provost & Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Dr. Dziuban, Director of the Research Initiative for Teaching Effectiveness and the QEP Co-Director discuss the evolution of the project, assessment of the project and the impact on the UCF campus.

Dr. Harman discusses the reason for the Quality Enhancement Plan, how Information Fluency was chosen and the value of being information fluent. He also discusses the issue of whether or not students entering the university are already information fluent and ready to use their social technology skills in an academic setting.
Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar

Dr. Morrison-Shetlar discusses the importance of information fluency and its inclusion in the UCF curriculum. She also talks about how information fluency is synonymous with the UCF unifying theme: The Environment and Global Climate Change. Dr. Morrison-Shetlar also discusses assessment of the quality enhancement plan (QEP) and the impact of the Information Fluency Initiative on the UCF campus.
Dr. Martha Marinara
Associate Professor of English and Director of the Quality Enhancement Plan
Dr. Marinara discusses the need for information fluency on the UCF campus and the mission of engaging the entire UCF campus in the QEP. The use of Engagement and Enhancement Grants is also discussed. Dr. Marinara briefly describes some of the projects.
Dr. Chuck Dziuban

Dr. Dziuban examines how information fluency has evolved during the life of the QEP. He talks about the “unbundling” of information and technology and the unanticipated outcomes (organic outcomes) of the QEP project.
Upward Bound
Dr. Rebekah McCloud
Director
Dr. McCloud discusses this pre-collegiate program and how they were able to use the $1,000 Enhancement Grant to further the work of Upward Bound. The assistance given to first generation has enabled students to learn information fluency skills. Dr. McCloud discusses the successes of the program, the challenges and the impact the grant has had on the Upward Bound students.
Molecular Biology & Microbiology
Dr. Ken Teter
Assistant Professor
Dr. Teter received a $1,000 Enhancement Grant and used the funds to develop the PURE program. In this video Dr. Teter discusses the need for this project, the involvement of constituencies inside and outside of the university and the impact the project had in its first year.
Burnett Honors College
Dr. Alvin Wang, Dean & Dr. Martin DuPuis, Assistant Dean
Drs. Wang and DuPuis discuss the value of information fluency in all disciplines. The Burnett Honors College was one of the pilot projects in the QEP program receiving an Engagement Grant. In this video they discuss how they involved students, faculty and staff into their project and the inclusion of the Junior Achievement program.
Nursing
Dr. Judy Ruland
Associate Professor
The College of Nursing was one of the Pilot projects and received an Engagement Grant to utilize in integrating information fluency into the college’s curriculum. The College of Nursing has included the principles of information fluency in their RN programs from the Bachelor’s degree through their doctoral degree in nursing. Dr. Ruland discusses the successes and challenges faced when implementing the IF principles and the immersion approach the staff used to get “up to speed” on information fluency.
Financial Literacy

Director of Partnership Development
Ms. Powell ‘s Enhancement Grant project was to assist Freshmen students in making good decisions about credit and to make educated decisions when receiving credit offers. Ms. Powell partnered with numerous outside agencies and presented classes, seminars and expos to assist students in making good financial decisions. She also discusses the challenges and successes of their project.
Strategies for Success
Joe Ritchie, Executive Director, First Year Experience
Jennifer Wright, Director, Student Academic Resource Center
Strategies for Success is a Freshman class (SLS 1501) which helps lay a foundation for new students at the university. This is another of the Pilot Projects and they received an Engagement Grant to enable participation. They will discuss how they changed their entire curriculum for this course and included information fluency. The “netiguette project” is discussed as well as the successes of the program.
Biology
Dr. Linda Walters, Associate Professor and Pam Thomas, Instructor
Dr. Walters and Ms. Thomas have received two $1,000 Enhancement Grants over the past three years. In this video they discuss the importance of information fluency in their discipline, research today vs. ten years ago, and their Information Fluency project.
Knight Owl Program – UCF Writing Center
Dr. Rusty Carpenter

Dr. Carpenter discusses the value of information fluency, specifically information literacy and technology literacy, for writing students. The Information Fluency Initiative has allowed the University Writing Center to begin the Knight Owl program giving writing center access to students around the globe.
Cocoa and Palm Bay Regional Campus Writing Center
Dr. Lauren Miller
Director of Academic Support Services
Dr. Miller discusses using writing resources and library resources on the Cocoa campus and utilizing these resources to ensure students are more information fluent. They first established a base line and then tested students who were involved in the program. Dr. Miller discusses the goals of the project and some of the unique aspects of this project.
Political Science
Dr. Houman Sadri
Associate Professor
Dr. Sadri received a $1,000 Enhancement Grant and his project dealt with media and power. The grant allowed Dr. Sadri to change his teaching methods and become more efficient in teaching students with research, Internet usage, and writing skills. Dr. Sadri’s project was for one of his online classes.
Psychology
Dr. Shannon Whitten
Visiting Professor
Dr. Whitten has had two $1,000 Enhancement Grant projects. One for Automated Essay Graders in online classrooms where they investigated whether students responded differently when they knew an automated grader would be grading their essays instead of a person. Her second project dealt with the news media and teaching students to write a persuasive argument. In this video Dr. Whitten discusses the successes and challenges faced with the projects and the results of project.
